by Bruce Sanderson | WINE SPECTATOR | Issue date Oct 31, 2020 |
90/100 | PIANTONAIA 2017 • "Intense aromas and flavors of cherry, black currant, Tuscan scrub and iron mark this fluid red. Well-structured and balanced, with a firm finish. Merlot. Drink now through 2024".
|
88/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2018 • "Plump and juicy, boasting cherry, strawberry, floral and wild herb flavors. Balanced and mouthwatering, with a light coating of tannins on the finish. Drink now through 2024".

by Bruce Sanderson | WINE SPECTATOR | Web only | Oct 31, 2020 |
89/100 | CAPOGATTO 2017 • "A lean style, whose cherry, blackberry, floral, iron and tobacco flavors are enveloped by firm, chalky tannins. The fruit quality is excellent, but the dry finish is a bit troubling. Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2021 through 2029".

September 18, 2020 | "Chianti Classico: More Than Meets The Eye " |
by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS | Issue: September 18, 2020 |
93+/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2016 • "The 2017 Il Carbonaione is a very beautiful and expressive wine. It is also quite ripe and forward, its mid-weight structure notwithstanding. I would use those qualities to their advantage, as the 2017 is likely to mature faster than other recent vintages, and that's when Il Carbonaione really blossoms. Sweet pipe tobacco, leather, mint, game and licorice are some of the notes that are laced into the finish".
|
93/100 | CAPOGATTO 2017 • "Capogatto is Poggio Scalette's blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. 2017 is bright, fragranced and light. Readers will find it a wine driven by Greve and the house style rather than by an aromatic profile most readers would associate with Bordeaux varieties. Even so, there is plenty to appreciate. 2017 is a very pleasant wine with soft edges, bright acids and balanced final. In this vintage, Capogatto has a lighter style compared to the norm".
|
91/100 | PIANTONAIA 2017 • "The 2017 Piantonaia, 100% Merlot, is an attractive wine with plenty of near and medium-term appeal. Super-ripe dark cherry, plum, hard candy and spice are the signatures of a warm, dry year. Even so, the 2017 retains a mid-weight sense of structure and terrific balance. What it does not offer in complexity it makes up for it with its sheer deliciousness".
|
89/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2018 • "The 2018 Chianti Classico is a very pretty wine, not complex or super-structured, but a real delight to taste. Bright red Sangiovese fruit and sweet floral notes are front and center. Time in the glass brings out a range of cedar, leather and tobacco notes. More than anything else, the 2018 is a wine to enjoy for its fruit goodness".

THE RECORD OF TUSCANY: SUPER TUSCAN AND BOLGHERI
|
96/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2017 • "The sensory profile of this mordant red in the visual and sensory matrix is lively and fragrant. The hints of red plums perfectly blends well with wild violet, cedar and orange juice and describe the main profile of a broad-shouldered top player. Medium-full body, creamy and silky on the palate showing polymerized tannins of important quality and a finish of medium persistence, lovely since the beginning, immediately. Compact and concentrated throughout the progression. Drink now or old".
|
96/100 | PIANTONAIA 2017 • "Full and essential, the Piantonaia shows in the 2017 vintage a sweetness that you don't expect in the delicate floral profile of remarkable beauty. Lavender meets the white flowers of magnolia, linden and acacia to intertwine gently with the quality of grapefruit juice and lime peel. Medium-full body, lovable and relaxed immediately makes beauty his best weapon. It shows soft tannins with little extracts, sweet by nature and ends with a finish of medium persistence with a very pleasant drinkability. Drink now".
|
94/100 | CAPOGATTO 2017 • "Brilliant in the sensory matrix it shows notes of cherries, red plums, cut grass, thyme and lemongrass. Beautiful gentle background that tells of rose petals and mandarin peel. Medium-full body, soft and enveloping tannins and a slightly herbaceous finish in the lateral progression. Better since 2021".
|
92/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2018 • "Crunchy aroma with lively and intense fruits of raspberries and blueberries. The citrus undertone is delicious. Medium body, soft and little extracted tannins and a fruity and very pleasant finish. Drink now. Serious".

|
95/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2017 • "A creamy, ripe-tannined red with chocolate, berry, light vanilla and cappuccino character and a solid core of fruit and polished tannins. It’s full-bodied and well crafted. Better after 2022, when it will all come together".
|
94/100 | CAPOGATTO 2017 • "A red with energy and focus for this ripe and dry vintage with dried-berry, cedar and leaf character to the hints of citrus. It’s full-bodied, yet lightly austere, which gives it character and tension. Tight tannins. Give it some time to soften. Better after 2022".
|
93/100 | PIANTONAIA 2017 • "A red with focus and precision and beautifully ripe, polished tannins. It’s medium-to full-bodied with dried-cherry, strawberry and berry character. Balanced and well crafted for this hot and dry vintage. Merlot. Drinkable now, but better in 2022".
|
90/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2018 • "A soft, easy Chianti Classico with sweet-berry and light cedar character. Some citrus zest. It’s medium-bodied with good fruit and a fresh finish. Drink now".

92/100 | 2017 IL CARBONAIONE • "Owned by renowned oenologist Vittorio Fiore, who purchased the abandoned property in 1991. Il Carbonaione is the estate's oldest vineyard with 90-year-old vines planted on a steep terraced hillside in Ruffoli. Dark cherry, lavender and violet are infused with hints of tar. This is fruit-laden but pure, with an underlying juicy citrus note and velvety tannins. Finishes with sweet baking spice and vanilla. Drinking Window 2021 - 2031"

Firm and tangy on a medium-to full-bodied palate with excellent balance and finesse. Tight tannins and cutting acidity make their mark here in classy style. Drink from 2021".
|
87/100 | PIANTONAIA 2016 • "Fascinating aromas of cherries and plums with hints of tomato stem, following through to a full body, with intense tomato-paste flavors and a polished, tannic finish. Some may like it, but I find it a little odd. Tasted twice with consistent notes. Drink now".

by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue Sept. 19, 2019 |
94/100 | CAPOGATTO 2016 • "A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the 2016 Capogatto is a beautifully intense and focused wine with plump cherry and blackberry aromas. The bouquet is delivered like an arrow, shot with pinpoint precision. The wine shows elegance and freshness on the close, a great accompaniment to veal and provolone involtini".
|
88/100 | PIANTONAIA 2016 • "From a one-hectare vineyard, the 2016 Piantonaia is a ripe red wine with syrupy aromas of cherry confit and blackberry preserves. There is more than enough ripe fruit here, as well as notes of tar, resin and scorched earth. You get lots of cherry liqueur and crème de cassis in pure form and some hot vintage sweetness on the close. This Merlot feels too ripe and sweet, but it's still a good picnic wine for some tacos de carnitas with plenty of squeezed lime, salt and cilantro".

by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS | Issue August 22, 2019 |
92/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2016 • "The 2016 Il Carbonaione, 100% Sangiovese, is silky and nuanced. Less rich and explosive than it often is, the 2016 shows a more refined, understated side of Sangiovese for this wine. Sweet tobacco, dried herbs, mint, licorice and game add layers of complexity. The 2016 is pretty, but not the overachiever it so often is. Quite frankly, I expected more given the quality of the vintage".
|
88/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2017 • "Poggio Scalette's 2017 Chianti Classico is forward and juicy, as so many wines are in this vintage. Sweet red cherry, tobacco, spice and leather shape this racy, pliant Chianti Classico from Poggio Scalette. The 2017 is not terribly complex, but it is quite tasty".

NEW RELEASES FROM TUSCANY |
by Tom Hyland | FORBES | Posted on Jun. 14, 2019 |
In “New Releases from Tuscany – Tenuta Perano And Poggio Scalette”, Tom Hyland writes about Italian wine families he has come to trust over the years due to the consistent quality of their wines. He includes PODERE POGGIO SCALETTE providing a quick history of the winery. He writes “The wines of Podere Poggio Scalette are produced from vineyards here, specifically from a hill known as Ruffoli. It was here in 1991 when Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana planted vineyards and olive groves; today, there are five wines produced - four of them red -along with grappa and olive oil.”
|
EXCELLENT | IL CARBONAIONE 2016 • "100% Sangiovese from vineyards averaging 80 years of age. Deep ruby red with inviting aromas of red and black cherry and plum, this is medium-full with nicely integrated wood notes (from medium-sized oak casks) and has a lengthy, appealing, well balanced finish. This is approachable now, but will be its best in another 5-7 years, and should peak a few years after that. Pair this with game birds or most grilled meats".
|
VERY GOOD | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2017 • "100% Sangiovese that was fermented and aged in cement vats. Medium-full, this offers ripe black cherry fruit (2017 was a hot growing season), and notes of brown herbs, with medium-weight tannins. This is a bit sharp on its own, but it is so enjoyable with grilled meats. Enjoy this over the next 2-3 years".

"ITALY, TUSCANY: RANDOM TUSCANY (New Releases)" |
by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue May 31, 2019 |
93/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2016 • "Vittorio Fiore's 2016 Il Carbonaione is a robust expression of Sangiovese from a classic vintage. The wine is carefully balanced but also powerful at the same time, with bright cherry and wild berry aromas followed by tilled earth and garden herb. You also get lighter tones of licorice and tar at the back. Despite the opulence and generosity of the bouquet, the wine ultimately proves lean and elegantly streamlined in terms of mouthfeel".
|
91/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2017 • "The Podere Poggio Scalette 2017 Chianti Classico opens to heightened intensity and extraction that is characteristic of this hot vintage. The fruit has gained in color darkness and flavor intensity thanks to the summer heat that reduced the size of the berries, thus increasing that deep, inner intensity. However, those Sangiovese-driven flavors of crunchy cherry and wild berry also come through as does the wine's fresh acidity and tannic backbone".

B | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2017 • "Extreme tangy-ness, briny ripe cherries, and floral notes dominate this Classico from the Greve township with the acidity at an all time high and the tannins struggling to be heard. There is an underlying forest floor aroma, but it is fleeting. This wine is quite young but it should be consumed soon as the fruit notes seem delicate enough that in a few years they’ll be gone. It feels like the balance here is on the edge of falling apart, yet somehow all the characteristics are holding in place. Buy now, drink now".

by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS | Issue Feb. 22, 2019 |
95+/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2015 • "The 2015 Il Carbonaione is fabulous. It is also quite a bit more refined than I expected in this warm year. Nuanced, silky and light on its feet for such an intense wine, the 2015 a has a lot to offer. As has been the case in the past, I expect the 2015 won't start to drink well until age ten or so. I am not sure I remember seeing a young Carbonaione with this much delineation and finesse. I can't wait to see how it ages. Carbonaione remains one of the most under the radar wines in Italy".
|
94/100 | PIANTONAIA 2015 • "The 2015 Piantonaia, 100% Merlot, is positively stellar. Rich, radiant and luscious in the glass, the Piantonaia is a wine that exudes class. Today, the flavors are quite primary. Readers should plan on cellaring the 2015 for at least a few years in order to gain more aromatic nuance and overall complexity".
|
93/100 | CAPOGATTO 2015 • "The 2015 Capogatto is a blend of Merlot, Petit Verdot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Fresh and perfumed in the glass, with lovely bright red-toned fruit, the 2015 has much to recommend it. The distinct red toned profile and mid-weight structure are not exactly in keeping with what one might expect from a Bordeaux-based blend, but all the elements are nicely balanced".

by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue #239 | Oct 31, 2018 |
94/100 | CAPOGATTO 2015 • "The 2015 Capogatto is a dark and thickly textured blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. That blend of grapes shows extremely well in this warm vintage, and you are treated to directness, fullness and dark fruit intensity as a result. This is a full-bodied red that wraps thickly and smoothly over the palate. It should evolve over the next 10 years or more, or you could drink it right now. Either way will award lots of pleasure and satisfaction".
|
92/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2015 • "The 2015 Il Carbonaione presents a thick and darkly saturated side of Sangiovese. This expression opens to a dark garnet color with ripe aromas of black cherry, prune and blackberry. This edition delivers extra thickness and richness, yet that mid-weight approach is never compromised. This wine should spread out and gain in volume as it evolves in the bottle. Some 26,000 bottles were made (whereas only 2,000 bottles of the 2015 Capogatto were produced)".

"Podere Poggio Scalette Alta Valle della Greve Il Carbonaione at no. 4 at is a longtime favorite of ours from Chianti Classico and the 2015 shows the richness and intensity of the vintage but an underlying power and structure. It’s made from a special clone of sangiovese from the area and the Fiore family have a wonderful lineage for modern winemaking, with the patriarch of the clan, Vittorio, being one of the gurus in the 1980s and 1990s" |
|
95/100 | CAPOGATTO 2015 • "This is a tight and focused young red with depth and beauty in both fruit and tannin quality. Violets, purple fruits and hints of flowers. Very aromatic, fresh and vivid. Drink in 2021, but it is exciting already".
|
95/100 | PIANTONAIA 2015 • "The gentle power and suggestion to this young red is very enticing. It shows freshness, floras and plenty of dark character. Full-bodied, tight and focused with very polished tannins and a very long finish. Gorgeous. Drink or hold".

Shows fine harmony and a lingering finish. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2020 through 2029".

87/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015 • "Truffle, underbrush, toast and charred earth aromas emerge in the glass. The palate shows the heat of the vintage, offering prune, dried black cherry and roasted coffee bean alongside close-grained tannins that leave a rather raspy finish. Drink sooner rather than later before the remaining fruit dries out".

91/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015 • "The 2015 Chianti Classico begins with inviting aromatics of cherries, exotic spices, tobacco, grilled herbs and earthy nuances all taking shape in the glass. This medium-bodied red is still a bit austere and on the leaner side with a notable layer of acidity at its core. The finish shows notable length, and is marked by cherry and spice characteristics. While I suspect this will soften and become a bit more approachable over the next few years, I suspect it will hits its peak within the decade. (Best 2019-2026)" (feb, 2018)

January 6, 2018 | "Chianti Classico: The stellar 2015s and Surprising 2014s" |
by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS | Issue Jan. 6, 2018 |
In “Chianti Classico: The Stellar 2015s and Surprising 2014s,” Antonio Galloni discusses the “gorgeous, radiant 2015s [and] the nervy, tense 2014s,” featuring POGGIO SCALETTE Chianti Classico DOCG 2015 (91 points) in his list of “Top 2015 Chianti Classicos.” Galloni reviews Chianti from the 2013, 2014, and 2015 vintages, including:
|
95+/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2014 • "The 2014 Il Carbonaione is one of the truly exceptional wines of this challenging season. Lithe and aromatic on the palate, with fabulous energy and overall brightness, it stands out for its superb balance. In many vintages, Il Carbonaione can be a bit bombastic. The 2014, on the other hand, is all finesse. Violet, lavender and cloves add shades of nuance to this bright, beautifully persistent Carbonaione. The 2014 won't be at its best for at least a few years, but its potential is evident".
|
93+/100 | CAPOGATTO 2014 • "The 2014 Capogatto is Poggio Scalette's blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot. In keeping with the style of the year, the flavors are bright and delineated, with midweight structure and tons of energy. It will be interesting to see how the 2014 develops. Today, it is best described as a wine of Poggio Scalette and the vintage, as the personality of the French varieties is not especially evident. A bit of time in the glass does wonders. This is another very pretty and expressive wine".
|
91/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015 • "The 2015 Chianti Classico is superb. Bright, focused and wonderfully lifted, it offers tons of Sangiovese personality. On the palate, the 2015 is pliant, silky and expressive, with exceptional balance and tons of class. Aging in cement allows the purity of the fruit to come through beautifully".
|
89/100 | CHIARA AURORA 2016 • "The 2016 Chiara Aurora, a blend of Trebbiano and Malvasia, is a very pretty white from Poggio Scalette. Citrus and floral notes give the wine its fresh, vibrant personality, but the old vines confer texture and persistence. Drink the 2016 over the next year or two".
|
88/100 | PIANTONAIA 2014 • "The 2014 Piantonaia, 100% Merlot, is a pretty, midweight wine. Like the Capogatto, the Piantonaia is very much marked by the personality of the year. It’s attractive, but also a touch slender. It will be interesting to see if more midpalate depth and texture develops with time in bottler".

by Joe D'Angelo | International Wine Report |
92/100 | 2014 IL CARBONAIONE • "The 2014 'Il Carbonaione' is a lovely display Sangiovese di Lamole from Vittorio and Jurij Fiore, which was sourced from vines more than 90-years-old planted to the stony, sandy silty-loam soils of the Carbonaione vineyard. The wine itself reveals a gorgeous dark color and opens to inviting aromas of blackberries, cherries and tart berries, which are woven together with tobacco, raw coffee bean, leather and hints of fresh violets, all coming through beautifully. On the palate this is medium to full-bodied and well balanced with lively acidity yielding a slightly austere finish. This spent 15 months in new/one year French (90%) and American (10%) barrels followed by an additional 9 months in bottle before release. (Best 2018-2025)"

by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue #230 | Apr 2017 |
89/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2015 • "Here is a terrific expression of Sangiovese with lots of round fruit flavors and dark intensity. The 2015 Chianti Classico offers a clean and direct interpretation of the vintage and puts strong focus on the integrity of those primary fruit characteristics. Blackberry, spice, leather and light tobacco give more depth and dimension".
|
88/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2014 • "How enologist Vittorio Fiore gets this Sangiovese to show so much darkness and extraction is a real mystery. The 2014 Il Carbonaione is a delicious and syrupy wine that defies the appearance of this mighty Tuscan grape variety as expressed in the region's major appellations. Instead, this IGT interpretation opens to an inky black color and impenetrable richness. The bouquet delivers black cherry, plum and lots of tobacco. In the mouth, however, you taste that fresh and almost thorny acidity that is so distinctive of Sangiovese. This difficult vintage offers moderate length and a short finish. The wine's balance is slightly off center".

by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue #228 (Interim issue) | Dec 2016 |
94+/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2013 • "Vittorio Fiore's 2013 Il Carbonaione is a softly integrated and well-composed expression of Sangiovese. It shows enormous richness and makes a lasting impression on all the senses, from eyes to nose to palate. The appearance is inky dark, and the bouquet offers a balanced medley of ripe fruit, backing spice, leather, chocolate and tart berry aromas. It needs a few more years to unwind and lose some of its nervous energy. This is a beautiful and unique expression of the grape that will show its best in about five years".
|
93/100 | CAPOGATTO 2013 • "The 2013 Capogatto is a gorgeous wine with a true and underlying sense of focus and sharpness. Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot make up the blend. The fruit tones, with wild berry and dried blueberry, are delivered in a clean and linear fashion. Sweet oak and baking spice fill in the rear. This is a dark and thickly saturated wine with sweet tannins and deep layers of plum, cinnamon and chocolate that peel off in slow succession".
|
88/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2014 • "From the Greve-in-Chianti subzone, the 2014 Chianti Classico is a raw and vinous wine that feels fresh from fermentation. There are plump aromas of black cherry and prune with cola and moist chewing tobacco. The effect is simple, but also very succulent. I am surprised, however, by the rich color and density achieved in this otherwise lean and watery vintage. This wine definitely defies the odds in terms of color intensity".
|
88/100 | CHIARA AURORA 2015 • "One normally does not associate Podere Poggio Scalette with white wines. That's why the 2015 Chiara Aurora (100% Trebbiano Toscano) comes as such a pleasant surprise. This is a bright and luminous white with cheerful aromas of peach, citrus and honey that spring buoyantly from the bouquet. The mouthfeel is crisp and lean in texture with dry mineral notes on the close".

03/11/2016 | RADIO INTERVIEW WITH VITTORIO FIORE |
by Levi Dalton | I'll Drink to That! | Posted on Nov. 3, 2016 |
In episode 391, host Levi Dalton interviews Vittorio Fiore, owner/winemaker of POGGIO SCALETTE in Tuscany and CASTELLUCCIO in Emilia-Romagna. The interview starts around the 5:00 minute mark, with Vittorio recounting his long history in Italian winemaking which began in the 1970s. He comments on the state of the Italian wine style of the time period—simple, straight-forward wines for everyday consumption—and how he, along with other key producers in the area, built the quality of Sangiovese grapes in the vineyards, with the goal to create great wines of structure, elegance and longevity.

by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS | Issue Oct. 11, 2016 |
95+/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2013 • "...is compelling. That's the good news. The bad news, if you can call it that, is that the 2013 is going to take the better part of the next decade to be at its best. Black cherry, plum, licorice and menthol are all fused together. Today, the 2013 is rich, deep and unctuous, with superb depth and striking balance. Opening a bottle anytime soon, though, is likely to be a mostly academic exercise, as the Carbonaione is so primary, it almost tastes like a barrel sample!".
|
92/100 | CAPOGATTO 2013 • "...(2013...) Capogatto, Poggio Scalette's, red Bordeaux blend is dark, plush and richly textured to the core. Inky blue/purplish fruit, spices, licorice and menthol take center stage. The flavors gain in freshness and brightness as the wine opens up in the glass. Plump, juicy and forward, this flamboyant red will drink well right out of the gate".
|
88/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2014 • "is bold, super-ripe and racy to the core. Black cherry, plum, spice and mint all race across the palate. This is an unusually concentrated wine for the year".

IL CARBONAIONE 2012 • "This red comes from the good Poggio Scalette in Tuscany and is a varietal wine made from Sangiovese: an extremely elegant wine, silky as the best Chianti Classico, Brunello and more durable than most and only half as expensive as the famous Super Tuscans.
The vineyard, where it grows, was planted around 1920, when the vines were not trimmed out for high yield. Incredibly, what impact has on the wine. This reminded me - pardon - to a Haut-Brion."

"ITALY, TUSCANY: CHIANTI CLASSICO: THE MAKING OF A DREAM TEAM " |
by Monica Larner | eRobertParker.com | Issue #221 | Oct 2015 |
93/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2012 • "The 2012 Il Carbonaione represents a tremendous effort. This is a stylish and generous wine that delivers high caliber aromas of dark berry, spice, leather, cola and grilled herb. Il Carbonaione is a single-vineyard expression of Sangiovese from 80-year-old vines. It is the result of years of research into the variety by leading enologist Vittorio Fiore and his team. What distinguishes this wine is the quality of its aromas, the immaculate way in which they are presented and the silky, long nature of the mouthfeel. This is a beautiful wine".
|
93/100 | CAPOGATTO 2011 • "The 2011 Capogatto is a Bordeaux blend of grapes with an all-Italian personality. This is a thick and expressive blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, and you definitely feel the heft and power of those brawny and muscular red grape varieties. The bouquet shows dark berry nuances with spice, leather, mineral notes and rosemary oil. The overall effect is beautiful and harmonious. Capogatto packs additional punch thanks to the ripe fruit obtained in the hot 2011 vintage".
|
91/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2013 • "The 2013 Chianti Classico is a delicious wine with a very clean entry to the palate. The wine makes its mark thanks to shapely aromas of dark fruit, dried cherry and plum. The quality of the fruit is evident in the classic 2013 vintage. Clean acidity and bright berry flavors move towards the palate where they are both refreshing and invigorating. This is a great wine to pair with grilled meat or flatbread with smoked bacon or sausage".

89/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2012 • "The 2012 Chianti Classico opens to a dark ruby hue and beautifully balanced concentration. Despite the slightly darker appearance of this wine, the overall effect is decisively taut, crisp and elegant. Wild berry, fresh cherry, and dried blueberry give way to etched mineral tones and light shadings of oak spice. The wine achieves impressive balance, and it boasts a very bright and buoyant quality of fruit. This vintage is slightly less intense, but the wine is a pleasure to drink nonetheless".
|
88/100 | CAPOGATTO 2012 • "The 2012 Capogatto opens to savory tones of dark fruit and barbecue spice that give the wine a broad and heavy consistency. All that bulk seems to build up on the nose, however, because the mouthfeel is much leaner and lighter than you may initially suspect. There is a ripe and sticky quality to the fruit that takes away from the wine's complexity and finesse. The delivery is bold and broad, and there are sweet tannins and spicy flavors on the close".

"Vittorio Fiore was one of Tuscany's army of itinerant oenologistd but decided to establish his own wine estate. The result was Poggio Scalette half way between Greve and Panzano, bought by Vittorio and his wife in 1991.

Settembre 2015 | TASTING REPORT |
by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS |
95/100 | IL CARBONAIONE 2012 • "...comes across as quite shy and reserved today, with less of its typical exuberance. That just makes me think the wine is going to need a few years to blossom. Sweet red cherry, plum, kirsch, spice and rose petal nuances gradually emerge from the glass, but the 2012 remains reticent and not fully expressive. I would not be surprised to see the market look past the 2012, as it is not at all showy, but that will just create an opportunity for savvy consumers. There is plenty to look forward to. Readers will have to be patient, though. Over the years, Il Carbonaione has built a tremendous track record of aging very well. Next to Chianti Classico's other 100% Sangioveses, Carbonaione is made in a sweeter, jammier style with more mid-palate opulence. Although showy in its youth, Carbonaione needs time in bottle to show at its best".
|
91/100 | CAPOGATTO 2012 • "...Poggio Scalette's 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Cabernet Franc, 25% Petit Verdot blend is fleshy, radiant and expressive, with all of the fruit pushed forward. Silky tannins and sweet, spiced aromatics add to the wine's considerable near and medium-term appeal. In 2012, Capogatto is less concentrated and dense than the Carbonaione. As such, I imagine it will provide its best drinking sooner rather than later. Hints of white truffle, blood orange and raspberry jam are laced into the ripe, succulent finisha".
|
88/100 | CHIANTI CLASSICO 2013 • "Poggio Scalette's 2013 Chianti Classico is a plump, juicy wine to drink now and over the next few years, while the fruit retains its freshness. Sweet red berries, spices and crushed flowers add nuance on the perfumed, silky finish. There is nothing especially fancy here, rather it is the wine's exuberance that carries the day".

Magnificent bouquet, ripe cherries and wild berries, a hint of grenadine, significant, but appropriate toasted, invites beautiful in the nose. On the palate dropsig, delightful perfume pointing in the interior, easy eichiges finals. Fairly research, respectively in a modern style. Certainly equipped with popular taste. Every sip of this wine made from Sangiovese makes us dream a balmy summer night on the terrace of a villa surrounded by vineyards of over 70 years on the terraced hills of Chianti in Ruffoli. by Joe D'Angelo | International Wine Report |
94+/100 | 2011 CAPOGATTO • "The 2011 ‘Capogatto’ is an absolutely stunning Bordeaux style blend from Poggio Scalette composed of equal parts Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It immediately bursts open with fresh aromas of pure dark fruits, mainly blackberries and cherry reduction, which are woven together with pain grille, tar, roasted coffee, floral, savory herbs and Asian spices. This full-bodied red shows wonderful purity, concentration and depth while remaining beautifully balanced all the way through the long, polished finish. This is just about impossible to resist, even at this early stage, however those who are patient will also be able to watch this evolve for many years. Readers who enjoy Bordeaux should not pass this up. (Best 2014-2029)"
|
94/100 | 2011 IL CARBONAIONE • "Year after year the ‘Il Carbonaione’ is a fantastic offering from Poggio Scalette and the 2011 is no exception. This 100% Sangiovese from rare clonal examples of the famous “Sangiovese di Lamole” opens with gorgeous aromas of blackberry, black plums, spices, moist earth and floral. It has a full body with a gorgeous silky round texture that is well structured and balanced with underlying acidity that provides momentum into the long finish. As always, the ‘Il Carbonaione’ is a fabulous, age worthy wine that delivers. (Best 2017-2029)"

Sept. 2014 | TUSCANY PART 1 |
by Stephen Tanzer & Ian D'Agata | International Wine Cellar | Issue 176, Sept/Oct 2014 |
In “Tuscany Part 1: Chianti, Vino Nobile and Supertuscans,” Ian D’Agata focuses primarily on Sangiovese in the first installment of his report as he makes his way across central Tuscany... |
92/100 | 2011 CAPOGATTO • "Inky ruby. Deep, penetrating aromas of blackberry, cassis, violet and aromatic herbs. Bright, dense and suave, with a hint of black pepper complicating flavors of balsamic vinegar and chocolate-covered black fruits. Finishes pure and long, with peppery acidity and a repeating floral quality. This outstanding wine is a dead ringer for some famous new-wave Saint-Emilions".
|
91/100 | 2011 IL CARBONAIONE • "Inky ruby. A perfumed violet nuance complicates dark plum and blueberry syrup on the enticing nose, with red fruit notes emerging with aeration. Dense, rich and suave, with harmonious acidity providing clarity and cut to the very deep red berry and cocoa flavors. Finishes pure and very long, with silky tannins. This develops more of a red berry profile with aeration. An outstanding wine, but I would have scored it even higher had it reminded me more of sangiovese".
|
88/100 | 2012 CHIANTI CLASSICO • "Extremely deep ruby is atypical for a wine that is reportedly 100% sangiovese. Vibrant aromas of blackcurrant, violet and minerals. Fresh and juicy on the palate, with blackcurrant and mineral flavors carrying nicely on the lively, persistent finish. No oak".

Sept. 2014 | TASTING REPORT |
by Antonio Galloni | VINOUS |
94/100 | 2011 IL CARBONAIONE • "The 2011 Carbonaione is another gorgeous wine in a line of successful vintages that goes all the way back to 1992. Blackberry jam, cloves, menthol, licorice, new leather and sweet spices flesh out in a voluptuous, racy wine that beautifully expresses the personality of the vintage. Today, the 2011 is rich, layered and voluptuous to the core. It is also incredibly primary. Readers who want to experience the 2011 in its full glory will have to wait at least a few years, but there is little question the 2011 is a worthy follow up to the epic 2010".
|
89+/100 | 2012 CHIANTI CLASSICO • "Poggio Scalette's 2012 Chianti Classico is gorgeous. Dark red and black stone fruits, spices, leather and menthol meld together in a supple yet powerful wine endowed with terrific depth and complexity at its level. All the elements are in the right place".
|
89/100 | 2011 CAPOGATTO • "The 2011 Capogatto is decidedly ripe, oaky and sweet in this vintage. There is plenty of depth and richness in the glass, but most of the wine's appeal is up-front, as the persistence and depth tail off dramatically on the mid-palate and finish".

RANK #21 (96/100) | 2010 IL CARBONAIONE • "Year after year the ‘Il Carbonaione’ is a fantastic wine made from 100% Sangiovese and by now should be recognized by all as a flagship Italian wine. The 2010 is no exception, it is an absolutely thrilling wine that brings seductive aromas of pure ripe blackberries and black cherries are followed by espresso, scorched earth, charcoal, exotic spices and hints of herbs, which soar form the glass. It demonstrates amazing balance and finesse with fantastic underlying acidity supported by a gorgeous rich velvety texture that is layered with remarkable depth, leaving you with a lasting impression of delicious dark fruits and roasted coffee flavors that linger on and on. This is probably the best ‘Il Carbonaione’ I have ever tasted and destined to be a classic, however it will certainly need some time to fully develop in bottle and patience will be handsomely rewarded. 97/100 | 2010 IL CARBONAIONE • "...is a stunner. Deep, rich and utterly impeccable, the 2010 boasts breathtaking richness, energy and power. The flavors remain incredibly primary in a wine that will require years to develop. Graphite, crushed rocks, blue/black fruit, plums and smoke emerge over time. As phenomenal as the 2010 is today, it really should be cellared for at least a few years. This is a drop dead gorgeous wine from Vittorio and Jurij Fiore".
|
94+/100 | 2010 CAPOGATTO • "...is compelling. Mocha, plums, smoke, licorice and incense all literally explode from the glass in a super-ripe, intense wine loaded with character and pure personality. The 2010 is wonderfully warm, open and resonant, yet there is more than enough underlying structure to provide balance. This is a surprisingly big, rich wine for the year, but it all works. Capogatto is a Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon/Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot blend".

96/100 | 2009 CAPOGATTO • "What perfume, with haunting violet, black currant, cherry, pepper and light spice aromas that are pure and expressive. On the palate, this is refined and elegant, with intensity and great harmony. The structure shows on the finish, which will support this red through the next decade and beyond. |
92/100 | 2009 IL CARBONAIONE • "Inky in color, this new wave red boasts black currant, blackberry, violet and light spice flavors. Polished and thickly textured, with a pleasantly bitter finish of sweet fruit. Sangiovese. Best from 2014 through 2022".

"TUSCANY 2009 AND 2010: A WORLD OF OPPOSITIES" |
by Antonio Galloni | eRobertParker.com | Issue #201/2012 | Jun 2012 |
These are interesting times in Tuscany. There is no doubt the region is in the midst of a profound stylistic
evolution. A growing number of estates are moving in the direction of more natural viticulture. In the cellar, new
oak is down and the use of neutral vessels is up. Cement, once virtually forgotten, is making a huge
comeback... |

92/100 | 1998 IL CARBONAIONE • "Here we go again, we are falling back into a great Tuscan wine, not international grapes though, but very classic made from sangiovese grapes. In this wonderful land would say that everything is fine, but it would detract from the many good producers with seriousness and commitment, perhaps starting with beliefs far apart, can produce similar jewelry. In particular, this fourteen year old had a mouth marmellatosa at the right point, freshness and harmony for sale with beautiful fine tannins. The nose clear hints of tobacco and wet undergrowth"

by Robert Bath (Instructor at the Culinary Institute of America at Greystone, St. Helena California) | SOMMELIER JOURNAL | Issue #02-03/2012 |
2008 Il Carbonaione • "Produced from vines as old as 90 years, Il Carbonaione is a 100% Sangiovese super-Tuscan. Noted winemaking consultant Vittorio Fiore and his son Jurij meticulously farm this vineyard, situated in the hills outside Siena at an altitude of 1,500 feet. The wine features definitive black-cherry, blueberry, black-licorice, and mineral notes, with a beautiful balance of alcohol and tannin and a long finish. It’s wonderful now, but it will be spectacular later in its life". |
